Anger, Trust and Betrayal Issues
How is talking going to make me less angry, less sad, less hurt, less betrayed?
As a therapist, I am interested in how you are feeling and what feelings are causing a problem.
Also, as a therapist, I am not interested in getting your feelings to go away. They are part of your life. They express who you are. I do not want my clients to feel less.
Going a little deeper feelings are signals of a problem, like a distress call from a sinking ship. A therapist does more than ‘talking.’ Consider the following:
Listening and Depression: We are skilled at listening to people with care and empathy but also with understanding. Sometimes people we grew up were not really listeners and did not acknowledge our feelings. One can be sad/depressed because of feeling alone because no one listens. When the therapist listens that sadness/depression may begin to lift.
Trust and Betrayal: If you have been betrayed and distrust the person who betrayed you, I might talk to you about trust and betrayal, however, not make it go away but to inform you of the realities of trust. I am not likely going to encourage you to trust someone who betrayed you until there has been a lot of experiences with them that indicate they can be trusted. You can’t, and shouldn’t, force trust.
Anger: I will want you to understand the purpose of your anger. Anger encourages us to communicate. Some communication when angry is positive if we focus on the problem or misbehavior. We misuse our anger if we attack the person with personal insults. Anger can be less if we learn effective ways to confront.
Role of the Therapist: My role as a therapist is to help you make permanent changes in your life. Making permanent changes in your life requires a therapist equipped with the skills and methods that get to the emotional learning and core beliefs which are rooted in our experiences.
Tools the Therapist may Use:
The therapist may use Coherence Therapy, EMDR, The Journey or Listening Prayer therapy to accomplish that. (There are others but these are four that I use.) Any therapist who can benefit you in this way is highly skilled based on specific training and supervised practice. To you it may look like they are just ‘talking’ but it goes way beyond ‘talking.’ It has to go way beyond talking if your therapist is to be successful in creating lasting changes in your life.
